1. Brown University: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Spatial Analysis
The Research Associate will participate in a variety of research projects under the direction of Dr. John Logan and associated with the University’s initiative on Spatial Structures in the Social Sciences. The tentative starting date is 7/1/17. Major current studies are focused on the use of historical census data for the period 1880-1940 for which 100% population microdata are available. These projects have a major geographical component that includes drawing historically accurate GIS street maps of major cities, identifying enumeration district boundaries, and geocoding individual addresses. Projects include: 1) examination of Bayesian models to improve small area estimation, 2) identification of neighborhoods based on race, ethnicity, and class composition, 3) studies of neighborhood change and segregation trends over time, and 4) analyses of individuals’ recruitment into specific locations. These projects require familiarity with GIS and spatial analysis methods and experience working with census data and similar large-scale datasets.

The Research Associate will participate in a recently funded National Science Foundation (NSF) project under the direction of Dr. Rachel Franklin and associated with the University’s initiative on Spatial Structures in the Social Sciences (S4) and the Population Studies and Training Center (PSTC). The tentative starting date is 7/1/17.
The project addresses spatial and demographic patterns of decline at the city and county levels and emphasizes the importance of spatial context in characterizing loss. Meeting project objectives of developing county- and city-level typologies of decline and investigating demographic change and migration patterns associated with different types of areas will require a background in GIS and spatial analysis, as well as experience working with relatively large spatial datasets. Project components include the development of new measures of place-specific population change that incorporate spatial context and temporal scale. This typology of population change will identify various types of declining and growing places, according to recent population change, the growth trajectory of neighboring areas, and population change in previous decades; the identification of the demographic sources of population decline (fertility, mortality, and migration) associated with each category of population change and investigation of variations in migrant characteristics and destinations by decline type; the evaluation of the demographic burden of decline (i.e., differences in the characteristics of those exposed to population decline), with special focus on the characteristics of those living in areas declining at multiple spatial scales; and an assessment of the dynamics of decline in order to elucidate how age structure, residential segregation, population composition and distribution, and poverty levels change when places lose population.

“Personal Aspirations and Processes of Adaptation: How the Legal framework Impacts on Migrants’ Agency”
Description of tasks:
The postdoctoral researcher will work in collaboration with the lead researchers. He/she will participate in the following tasks:
– Analysis of large-scale longitudinal databases on migration, administrative status and employment (population register, crossroads bank for social security).
– Design, implementation and analysis of a quantitative biographic survey among Congolese, Indian and American migrants in Belgium.
– Contribution to multidisciplinary articles on migration and integration.
– PhD in demography, quantitative sociology or related discipline.
– Strong quantitative skills and experience individual longitudinal data.
– A good knowledge of STATA or R.
– Strong interest in international migration research.
– An experience in the organization of a quantitative survey is an asset.
– Good working knowledge of English and/or French.
– Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
– Starting date: between October 2016 and January 2017.
– Duration: 18 months (possibility of renewal, conditional on availability of funds).
– Candidates should have completed their PhD in the past 5 years.

The LIMA Project: “Personal Aspirations and Processes of Adaptation: How the Legal framework Impacts on Migrants’ Agency” The LIMA project examines how legal frameworks – Belgian and European – correlate with third country national migrants’ agency. The scientific aim is twofold: understand how legal frameworks shape migrants’ professional, family and migratory trajectories and life projects; and analyse if, and which strategies migrants develop to bend the rules and circumvent obstacles, and/or use the opportunities offered by legal systems to fulfil their professional and family aspirations.

4. Ined Postdoctoral Position
Ined is recruiting to fill one postdoctoral position for its project “Global-Race” funded by ANR, with an appointment term of two years. The position will be attached to the research unit “International Migration and Minorities”.and the activities will be performed with the project team (see here: http://global-race.site.ined.fr/).
Profile: Doctoral degree in Social science and an experience in research on one or more of the topics related to racism, discriminations, equality policies or statistical classifications. Oral and written command of English and French. Knowledge of other European languages will be appreciated.
Working conditions: Fixed-term contract of two years with effect on 1 November 2016. The gross salary will depend on previous experience and range between 2350€ and 2733€ monthly (gross).
